22 October 2018

I took our Panathlon team to the Northern Regional Panathlon finals on Thursday 18th October at Fulford School. We were again up against our fiercest rivals Calderdale, who were representing West Yorkshire. Unfortunately they beat us again but victory was not quite as dominant as in previous years. We ran them close and were only beaten by 4 points with a fantastic total score of 52.

Going into the final event of athletics the scores were in fact level, with the reigning champions Calderdale having won the Boccia and Table Cricket and our school winning the New Age Kurling and Polybat. Calderdale then took victory in both the field athletics and races to seal another crown.

It was a fantastic day with special mention to two of my Year 7 debutants, Zak Kelly and Elliot Lawrence who won their New Age Kurling games. It was great to see them involved and helping our team achieve the runners up trophy.

Mr Harney, one of our Teaching Assistants summed up Panathlon’s effect on pupils at the school. “They really enjoy being in this environment, playing competitive sports and getting lots of social interaction,” he said.

“I think in life it’s all about competing and overcoming challenges and getting out of your comfort zone, learning that feeling of not doing well as well as that feeling when you succeed. It gives them a flavour of what they’ll experience in years to come.”

Well done and thank you to all the students, staff and the parents who always come along to support us, it is much appreciated. The Yorkshire finals are in February and hopefully we will get revenge on Calderdale!
