At Joseph Rowntree, we have recently invested in the Learning Resource Centre, or LRC as we call it. We have installed a set of computers so that Lexia software is available in our Literacy support classes. These computers also allow access to the Accessit Library Software, an online library system which allows our students to search for and reserve books, publish reviews of the books that they are reading and make peer recommendations.

We have set up a Student Librarian system so that students can volunteer to help our librarian in the LRC at lunchtime. With reading competitions, quizzes and our ‘regular reader’ library card scheme, we actively encourage students to build a love of reading that will last a lifetime.

We have also invested in the Accelerated Reader program that tests reading comprehension. Students select books at their reading level, read independently, and take a comprehension test on the computer. Each book is worth a certain number of points based on its length and reading level.
