It has been a busy start back to the school year for Key Stage 3! So much has been going on already this year that it is very difficult to cover all of it.
Earlier this half term, our fantastic new Year 7 students were fantastic ambassadors at the Year 6 Open Evening. It was a really lovely opportunity for them to show prospective students around and introduce them to the school that they are now such a big part of. You can watch the video that they helped to create for Open Evening below. At the end of the half term it is wonderful to see that they have settled in so well to Joseph Rowntree School. This week there has been a real celebration of their time so far at the school at the Year 7 Concerts that have been organised by Vaudeville (our performing arts faculty). Year 7 sang and performed beautifully and these evenings were a lovely way to mark such a successful start to the year.
This half term our Year 9 students also had the opportunity to hear about the work done by the Breck Foundation to promote internet safety. As a year group, they had the chance to listen to the story of someone directly affected by this issue and understand just how important it is to keep themselves safe. The School then hosted a non-uniform day to support the Breck Foundation with all the money collected going to support their cause.
Through our continued links with York Theatre Royal, we have also had the opportunity to run workshops for a select group of students on the text they have studied in English- ‘Animal Farm’ by George Orwell. This is a great opportunity to enrich their study of the text and explore some of its key themes in new and interesting ways.
Returning students may have also noticed some of the refurbishments that have been taking place in our Learning Resource Centre. The space looks fantastic and is a great place for students to come and read during breaks and lunchtimes. Some students have also entered our ‘Shelf Talker’ competition and the Winner will be announced early next half term.
A great start to the year!
