Extracurricular at Joseph Rowntree School
At Joseph Rowntree School, we believe that learning goes beyond the classroom. Extracurricular activities play a vital role in a well-rounded education, offering students the chance to explore their interests, build new skills, and connect with peers. From sports and arts to academic clubs and community service, these activities help students develop confidence, leadership, and teamwork—qualities that are essential for success in school and beyond. Participation in extracurriculars has also been shown to improve academic performance and time management, as students learn to balance multiple responsibilities. We encourage all students to find their passion, take risks, and get involved in the wide range of activities we offer. Whether discovering a hidden talent or simply having fun, extracurriculars help create memories, friendships, and skills that last a lifetime.
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award at Joseph Rowntree School
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) at Joseph Rowntree offers an incredible opportunity for students to challenge themselves, grow personally, and make a positive impact in their communities. Open to students aged 14 to 24, the DofE Award encourages participants to build resilience, develop leadership skills, and cultivate independence through a series of personal and community-focused challenges. The program consists of three award levels—Bronze, Silver, and Gold—each requiring commitment across four key sections: Volunteering, Physical, Skills, and an Adventurous Expedition.
Our DofE participants embark on a journey of self-discovery, gaining invaluable life skills while having fun and building lasting friendships. From learning a new skill or sport to completing meaningful service projects, the DofE Award program fosters well-rounded individuals who are prepared for future challenges. At Joseph Rowntree, we are proud to support students in pursuing this prestigious award and experiencing the rewards of achieving their goals.
Camps International Expeditions at Joseph Rowntree
At Joseph Rowntree School, we’re thrilled to partner with Camps International to offer students the unique opportunity to embark on life-changing expeditions across the globe. These expeditions are more than just travel—they are immersive experiences where students work directly on sustainable development projects that make a real difference in communities and environments in need.
Camps International expeditions empower students to tackle global issues such as wildlife conservation, education, access to clean water, and reforestation. Through hands-on service work, students develop essential life skills like teamwork, leadership, and resilience, while gaining a global perspective that enriches their understanding of the world. Each expedition is a journey of growth, cultural exchange, and personal achievement, fostering a deeper awareness of social and environmental responsibility.
We’re proud to offer this incredible opportunity for students to explore the world, give back, and return home with memories, friendships, and skills that will last a lifetime. At Joseph Rowntree the expeditions we have taken part in are Peru 2019, Cambodia 2024 and our upcoming expedition to Costa Rica in 2026.
