KS5 - English Literature
A Level (AQA)
English Literature is a fascinating course which allows students to read renowned, thought-provoking and transformative texts from across the English literary heritage.
Across the two years of the course students will study:
Tragedy
– Shakespeare’s King Lear or Othello
– Richard II by Shakespeare
– The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Social and Political Protest
– The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
– The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
– William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and Experience
INTERNAL ASSESSMENT
Students will have at least three timed assessments per text as well as the formal calendared mock examinations for the whole Sixth Form.
EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT
At the end of the course there will be two examinations: Paper 1: Tragedy – 2 hours 30 mins worth 40% of the A level Paper 2: Social and Political Protest – 3 hours worth 40% of the A level
NON-EXAMINED ASSESSMENT
Students also complete two pieces of coursework, both 1500 words long, on a novel and a poetry collection of their choice both worth 10% of the A level each.
