KS5 - English Language
A Level (AQA)
English Language is the study of the structures of language. The course encompasses how children acquire speech and learn to read and write. The course also covers areas such as the importance of accent and dialect, the impact of gender on speech as well as the varieties of English spoken worldwide.
Over the two year A level course you will study:
- A variety of written, spoken and multi-modal texts
- Child language development
- Language and gender
- Accent and Dialect
- The historical development of English
- The geographical spread of English worldwide
INTERNAL ASSESSMENT
Students will complete at least three timed assessments per half-term as well as the formal calendared mock examinations for the whole Sixth Form.
EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT
At the end of the course there are two examined papers both 2 hours 30 minutes and worth 40% of the A level each. Paper 1: Textual Variations and Representations Paper 2: Language Diversity
NON-EXAMINED ASSESSMENT
There are two pieces of coursework: A language investigation into an area which fascinates you – 2000 words and worth 10% of the A level grade.
A piece of original writing and a commentary – 1500 words and worth 10% of the A level.
