The Joseph Rowntree School

KS5 - Art & Design: Fine Art

A Level (AQA)

Fine Art is visual. A Fine Artist develops and produces images and/or sculpture to communicate imaginative, emotional or intellectual ideas. We manipulate line, tone, colour, shape and pattern to ensure our work has the desired impact on those who view it. The A level Fine Art course will develop your visual literacy and give you insights into the ways in which we understand and are influence by images. It will also equip you with the skills you need to produce successful works in a variety of media and technologies.

  • Over the two years of the course you will:
  • Increase your confidence in all types of drawing
  • Extend the range of media you can use fluently
  • Deepen your knowledge of printing and other technologies
  • Learn how to structure your creativity to effectively develop your own ideas and style

INTERNAL ASSESSMENT

Students will be assessed regularly throughout the course. Assessment will be on both underlying skills and knowledge and against exam assessment objectives.

EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT

There are two components:

Component I

Personal Investigation In which students select a subject or topic to investigate.

Component 2

Externally set assignment. In which student select from a list of eight topics set by the AQA.

In each component the sketch book and final work are exhibited for assessment. Work is assessed first by the school and then by an AQA moderator. Final assessment is controlled by criteria set by the exam board which emphasise the whole creative process from initial ideas through phases of development to the finished Art. A good sketch book showing thorough exploration and development is therefore essential.
