KS5 - Applied Science
Level 3 Extended Certificate (AQA)
The AQA Level 3 Extended Certificate in Applied Science will allow students the opportunity to learn and understand the core principles and practical applications that underpin applied science. The qualification’s synoptic focus will ensure that learning is coherent across all units.
Unit 1 takes through the key concepts in all three sciences
Unit 2 introduces students to applied experimental techniques. Students are encouraged to improve their research skills here.
Unit 3 asks students to develop analysis and evaluative skills whilst looking at science in the modern world in particular the ethical and science in the media.
Onto Unit 4 where students develop their knowledge and understanding of human anatomy and physiology.
Unit 5 allows students to take on the role of the research scientist through the completion of a scientific investigation.
Unit 6 gives learners an understanding of some of the key areas in modern medical physics.
INTERNAL ASSESSMENT
Unit 2 is an internally assessed module where they will produce one report per experimental technique of which there are 6.
Unit 5 is an internally assessed extended practical investigation drawing together learning from other units.
Unit 3b Medical Physics requires a written report.
EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT
One written examination of 90 minutes assessing Unit 1 - Key Concepts in Science.
One written exam with pre-released materials. This exam assesses Unit 3 Science in the Modern World.
PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT
Students will be required to complete six practical activities in Unit 2 that will be assessed internally by the classroom teacher.
Students will be required to safely complete their investigation in Unit 5.
Unit 3b requires students to work with radioisotopes in the lab.
