KS3 - Music
Curriculum Knowledge
Year 7: the first half of the first term concentrates on building up knowledge around the elements of music and preparation for the Y7 concert. Later in the year they continue building up basic skills in reading music, composing and listening.
Year 8: this builds on knowledge learnt in Y7 with a focus on key elements that are explored in various ensemble types. Computer based composition and sequencing skills are developed to a higher level.
Year 9: building on Y7/Y8 key skills and knowledge, students are encouraged to evaluate and self-assess, identifying areas they would like to develop further.
Skill Development
Subject Specific Skills:
- Play and perform confidently in a range of solo and ensemble contexts using their voice, playing instruments musically, fluently and with accuracy and expression
- Improvise and compose; and extend and develop musical ideas by drawing on a range of musical structures, styles, genres and traditions
- Use staff and other relevant notations appropriately and accurately in a range of musical styles, genres and traditions
- Identify and use the inter-related dimensions of music expressively and with increasing sophistication, including use of tonalities, different types of scales and other musical devices
- Listen with increasing discrimination to a wide range of music from great composers and musicians
- Develop a deepening understanding of the music that they perform and to which they listen, and its history
