Relationships, Sex and Health Education

Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) is a part of our curriculum that is designed to give our students the knowledge, skills and insight to be able to make well informed decisions, build and sustain positive relationships and lead healthy lives.

Our RSHE curriculum is planned and delivered to all key stages through a range of approaches. This includes dedicated lesson time within Citizenship lessons, tutor time activities, assemblies, themed whole year group events and workshops (led by external organisations). Throughout all of this, the learning is age appropriate, relevant and where required responsive to current events and or our local community context.

We keep our RSHE provision under review to ensure it reflects national statutory requirements. High quality RSHE is vital to support a safe, inclusive and supportive school environment for all students and staff.

RSHE is important for students to support:

Safeguarding and Personal Safety

  • Recognising Abuse: Children learn to identify grooming, domestic abuse, and toxic behaviors.
  • Understanding Consent: Pupils grasp the legal and emotional definitions of consent and boundaries.
  • Online Safety: Lessons address risks like cyberbullying, sexting, and online pornography.
  • Reporting Harm: Students discover exactly how and where to seek professional help.

Physical and Mental Wellbeing

  • Mental Health Literacy: Schools teach students to reduce stigma and manage anxiety or depression.
  • Puberty Education: Pupils learn about physical changes to reduce anxiety about growing up.
  • Sexual Health: Lessons provide factual data on contraception, STIs, and pregnancy choices.
  • Healthy Habits: Modules emphasize the benefits of sleep, regular exercise, and balanced nutrition.

Building Positive Relationships

  • Respectful Communication: Youth learn how to navigate friendships, family life, and romantic partnerships.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Curriculum promotes tolerance regarding different family structures, sexualities, and gender identities.
  • Conflict Resolution: Students practice solving disagreements without resorting to bullying or violence.

Media Literacy and Critical Thinking

  • Evaluating Content: Teenagers learn to critically assess idealized bodies and relationships on social media.
  • Fact-Checking: RSHE helps students separate harmful myths from accurate medical facts.
